Day 7

HotLanta Bitchezzz!!!!

We came into GA to play a college conference. All was well until Zac started saying something about my Mom....

We took a walk so K could follow up on his stocks....

...scolded some local artwork...

Gave our best "Bad-AssLanta" look (except for K)

...bought a Nerf football named Jimothy (Kyle for short).

After Zac "dressed' his bench-hurdling wound, i had him "go long" and then threw a swift one to his front snack.

that's for Mom.

We had all day to do nothing and by the time our performance came up, we were.....well......this:

D

Day 6

So we woke up on Ryan's floor, Pat did one of his famous hang-over runs around the foreign neighborhood, we packed the Blaze, and headed out to Charlotte, NC. We played at Evening Muse with a really cool band called The Stellas. Thanks triple S for hooking that up...

We met a Saint by the name of Donnie. He invited the whole band to stay the night and the lovely Laurie hooked us up with Plenty 'O' Top Snacks.

Their Dog Rosco liked some of us more than others....

...we watched My Morning Jacket DVDs all night (Donnie's bro is the keyboardist), took family portraits in the kitchen...

...Zac and I snuggled up in the living room...

...and woke up to an amazing pancake breakfast. How Rad is Don and Laurie?!?!?!

Thanks guys!

Day 5

This was the day before the sixth day. The sixth day has already come and gone. We're a day behind. In blog form you'll read this after you read day 6. For that matter, disregard this first part. Now regard:

Pat ALSO looks cool while driving!

......to.........

COLUMBUS, GA
This was an interesting town. The bar was very cool, but was located in the 'burbs in a kind of strip mall. Great sound system and an enthusiastic crowd. Lisa hooked us up with some booze and laughs. THANKS TIGER.

Pat and Zac are Happy Pandas in this panda series installment.

Ryan showed up and brought the NOISE. Then he brought us to his house in Atlanta. Thanks so much Rob and Ryan for the hospitality. We had a blast.

That seemed like a short day, huh?

DAY FOUR

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Day Four...Day Four...Day Four.....you dirty little day. One that will be remembered for a LONG time. Possibly forever thanks to Zac's scar. But we'll get into that later.
Day Four started off as an unsuspecting, somewhat normal day. Although there was K's swollen arms. (Apparently he's allergic to hotel "filth" and general "uncleanliness.") At any rate, we took our time getting up, showering in a clogged bathtub with everyone's dirty water up to our knees, and then headed out the door for some breakfast. What's that you say? What fine Wilmington restaurant did we choose?
"Whitey's" of course!! Where else?
What's even weirder than Whitey's itself is that our bass player, Pat, was recognized by the the wife of his Delaware High School best friend. Kinda started to feel like a "flashback" from the tv show LOST. Or a "flash FORWARD." Oh no.....what if we start time-traveling?? And get Bloody Noses?? And have to watch Jack Shepherd pathetically avoid having sex with Kate??!
Anyway, we left to go put brand new sneakers on the SilverBlaze. (due to a slight mud-trap we had to push out of the other day :(
We were told it would take a couple hours so we passed the time in the local Mall. Ha! Reminded me of being fifteen...checking out the "chicks in the food court." We stopped by a SUPER cheap Book Store and stocked up. Notice Zac actually OPENS his while mine just stay looking pretty in the bag.
When I realized the Bag of Books wasn't helping me look distinguished for the girls in "Hot Topic," we decided to make a Jupiter One Snowglobe. The greatest investment yet...we keep it propped on the dashboard.
The place that was making all the various useless photo items had a really weird sense of "marketing." Literally EVERY shirt, mug, and hologram Christmas Ornament was "In Memory Of..." It was ALL pics of dead people! These "urban" teenagers and young fathers and stuff. The depressing little ghetto-kiosk was also RIGHT next to the Carousel...WTF??!?!?!!
We got in the van and headed towards my friend's house in Charleston, SC. There was no show, we just had the night off and wanted to see the city. We got to Sean and Jessica's house around 9pm and left for dinner downtown. We were told by the local Ghost Tour guy that a bar called Griffon House is haunted. Naturally, we headed straight there. It IS over 200 years old and covered from top to bottom by dollar bills (about $4,000 worth), but ghosts?? We didn't see any and Zac is usually the FIRST guy to start up a conversation with one.
We actually called this guy around 1am but he was asleep :(
We met a bunch of "Spring Breakers" and an hour later K was tearing Zac's shirt in half.
Feeling very happy with the evening thus far, we decided to take the fun outside to the docks over-looking the water. It was PITCH Black out there, but "things to jump over" were plentiful. We started off by jumping from one square bench to another on one foot. There were some flags thrown on the "regulation" of my jump, but in the end i think we all agreed. Heilman came out the winner of Round 1. Next was the "swinging bench hurdle." This event proved very difficult because of the elevated height. Once again, Heilman makes a clean jump. Zac took 2nd with a good jump, but didn't exactly "stick" the landing. Up next was K and Holy Sh*t....HILARIOUS! He didn't even come close and wound up straddling the bench with his legs. We're talking running jump Crotch-Plant!
We were walking back to the SilverBlaze but decided to squeeze in one more event. The "back-to-back bench hurdle." These benches were deceptively challenging. They were not elevated by chains, which means lower height, but there WAS two of them. This meant having to jump twice as FAR. Naturally, Heilman makes the jump with grace ;) On deck is Zac. Now it's important to remember that we're all drunk, it's 3am, and we can BARELY see. Zac takes a running leap and catches the top with his shin. This sends his body forward and ends in a TOTAL face-plant!!! He hit the deck with his head...HARD!!!!
He gets up, wanders in a tiny circle for a second with blood streaming down his face, and says, "One more time." In shock or a bad-ass....you decide.
We rushed him to the hospital while he held a sock to his head. ( i had bought him a pair earlier from the Exxon). You ALSO have to remember he is still wearing a powder blue t-shirt COMPLETELY ripped down the middle. K gave Zac the shirt off his back as we sped to the ER. (what a guy) I desperately tried to convince Zac he should leave the half shirt on, but no luck.
He registered with the nurse...
Always keeps his cool in any situation...
We knew Zac would need stitches but wasn't sure if he'd have anaesthesia so I made him drink A LOT of vodka. Probably not the "smartest" thing to do but made sense at the time. We waited there for 3 and a half hours with a giant hole in Zac's head until it FINALLY got stitched up around 7 am. When the doctor was putting in the stitches i couldn't believe how gross it looked. I asked Zac if it hurt and he said, "It's weird. It feels like root beer." The doctor said, "That's the vodka talking," but we all know it wasn't. That's Zac talking.
SEVEN STITCHES above his bruised and swollen Right Eye. He kinda looks like Thom Yorke now so we're psyched. If you want to give him your sympathies, send him a get well comment @ www.MySpace.com/ZacColwell
DAY THREE
We left DC for the great city of Wilmington, NC. Exactly "why" it's great we haven't figured out yet...but we're open to suggestions.
We rolled up to "The Juggling Gypsy" and discovered it's a restaurant / hooka bar created by a fire-breather.
They had a dog named Cosmo, some good food, but only ONE mic stand. Zac had to Jerry-Rig the mic over a beam.
It was good to see our friends Lauren Taylor, Jeff, Tess' crew, and Airlie coming out to party.
After the show we headed straight for a Waffle House and "covered" some hash browns.
My friend Hallie told me about the jukebox and we decided to make it a priority. Apparently, if you write a song about Waffle House, they'll put it in rotation! By this time next year, we WILL have a Jupiter One song in the Waffle House jukebox. Mark my words.
That night we found a seedy Travel Lodge and laid our heads.....Good Night Wilmington
DAY TWO
We woke up and decided to go to a musuem.....we found out that D.C. is home to many "sculptures" or "works of art." This is a cute "idea" and if yer not smart enough to realize that they're actually "Outer Space Machines," I suppose you can sleep a lot easier.
Here we are in our most patriotic of miming photos, ( USA ! )
We walked around the National Gallery, pet some dogs by the reflecting pool, and ate some tacos.
Zac accepted a wager of $8 to drink all the salsa on the table......if you look closely you can see his salsa-stache
Zach chugs salsa from patdougherty on Vimeo.
After Zac defended my honor by settling a score with a Mountain Dew bottle,
We began a challenge of Bench-Hurdling. As the band will tell you, I seem to have been given a bionic jumping ability. Probably due to some nuclear explosion or a rare kangaroo bite. Here you see K desperately trying to compete.....poor guy.
The biggest challenge of the day was this garbage can...proved to be no match for my winged-heels
Pat gave Zac a new silky shirt that happens to be his second "power color" next to Apricot Nectar.
We showed up to IOTA club in Arlington and had some listening sessions in the van with Dane and Erica. I was inspired by our trip to the museum so I created my own little snare drum art.
After Tim Bracken, we got on stage and played most every song we know....Andy in the front supplied some drinks and then threw the glass against the floor like it was a Greek Wedding (Opah!) I guess K was drunk cuz he managed to get through the night without a scratch. The only guy I know who hurts himself more when he's sober. Erica gave Gordon his very first kiss and we all went back to her place afterwards for some pizza and Wii Tennis.
Thanks for a great night IOTA!!!!!!!!!!!
D
DAY ONE
Ladies and Gentlemen....introducing Pat Dougherty on Bass!
We left around 11am for our 7 hour drive to Charlottesville. Everything was going smoothly until we hit VA...got tied up in some ridiculous traffic and was kinda late to the show. We saw the most disturbing/awkward public art pieces on the street. It was a completely black, wooden, 2 dimensional sculpture of a man with a GIANT headed baby???
Our friends Staionary Set were right behind us. We got to the Tea Bazaar joint and saw some old friends, Rosie & Jessica. Pat was able to capture the moment in which Zac was told the band gets ONE free drink??!?!?!!!!
We watched Stationary Set and Shapiro melt faces, and then we closed out the night. The stage was small but the vibe in there was great.
A bunch of hippies were walking around with "re-juvenating face masks" and K fell victim to peer pressure. We discovered Jake Gyllenhaal has been "moonlighting" as the guitarist in Stationary Set ...
and Zac bludgeoned the top of K's head with the headstock of his guitar :(
Thanks to Margot & Co. for coming out to Pat's first show with us :)
We drove to our friend's house in D.C. after the show that night. A long and windy road. Bulgarian Woman's Choir in the van. THoughts on trees without a name having deeper meaning and significance to the planet Earth. As we drove through this town, we realized the Gods were smiling upon "Gordon's First Kiss Tour."
When we finally got to Rich and Courtney's house around 4am we entered the house quietly and proceeded to the living room. It was in that moment that we were welcomed by a plastic nude woman of African-descent with a disturbing expression on her face, "Latisha." She was wearing lingerie made of candy...
Not long after...sleep ensued.
Nuts and Gum Tour '08 Vol. 1
Here's a little video ditty featuring the beginning of our uber successful Nuts and Gum Tour (together at last!). If you go to the end, you'll see a fabulous yaz flute solo by Zac.
Thanks to all the great people who came out and friended us, and an extra hug to those who let us crash.
Also a special thanks to Brent and his fam in St. Louis for lending us your house for the weekend (sorry about the DVD player).
